There’s so much to see and do in our country’s capital, Washington, DC that it is sort of very unlikely to see them all in one visit. However, that didn’t stop my better half and youngsters from trying to cover everything on our current vacation. Here are only a few of the highlights we experienced on our vacation.

Our first challenge before we even left home was finding an affordable place to stay in the Washington, DC area. For the main part, hotels are pretty expensive in that area and make it tough to locate a good place for a family of five to remain without totally blowing the old budget. We ended up choosing the American Inn in Bethesda, MD and are extraordinarily happy with our choice. It’s not the most glamorous hotel in the area but very convenient, clean and affordable. So, we highly reccomend it when looking for Bethesda hotels.

Then, on to the tourist sites we enjoyed. Naturally we started with the famous State Monuments and Memorials. These included the Lincoln Commemorative , the Jefferson Memorial,the Washington Monument, and the Arlington National Cemetery. There were several more as Washington is a town of monuments and memorials. Many are found on the nation’s Mall but others are pretty spread out so that you will get a very good walk exercise if you plan to visit them all on foot as we did. (I admit I had to visit my Sacramento podiatrist when I got back home to deal with some foot pain from so much walking)

Next came our tour of the three different branches of official Presidency buildings.When sightseeing in Washington, D.C, the regime, the Capitol and the Supreme Court are key places to go to. Touring these impressive buildings will help you understand more about our government and its history. Plan in advance and learn about schedules and special events. The regime is the home and office of the President and is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW. To order a tour you must make a request thru one of your members of Congress. Group tours are held Tuesday through Sat. from 7:30 a. m. through 11:30 a. m. and are booked one month in advance.

At the east end of the National Mall stands the majestic U. S. Capitol Building. Due to heightened security, the Capitol is open to the public for led tours only.

The one thing you will want to do for sure is take a lot of photos as you tend to remember everything as you will remember everything as you are so impressed at the time but believe me, your memories tend to fade and it is always better to have some footage to help bring those memories back to pointy focus. I’m not one of those food photographers but wish I was to have better captured some of the beauty we saw on ths trip

Also, in addition to the typical tourist attractions discussed above, you may find that the Washington, DC area has some of the finest eateries in the country. I suppose this may be due to all of the important politicians that live there as well as the many dignitaries that visit the area and need to go out to eat.

When I first purchased my laptop, I was very hesitant to take out the laptop insurance. I mean, it sounded pretty pointless to me because what could possible happen? When I was just a kid back in the seventies, I always loved when the family would take a trip to go visit my grandparents. They lived about 300 miles from us, so whenever we went there, we always stayed overnight. Back then, it was just me and my sister, my mom and my dad. The one thing that stands out so clearly for me was the full bunk beds that my grandparents had bought for us, and were always there in the spare bedroom.

Both me and my sister loved those beds, taking turns sleeping on top each time we visited. As soon as we found out we were going we made sure we knew who’s turn it was for the top bunk. The waiting used to drive us crazy. I used to love just going up and down the ladder that was hanging on the side of the bed. We would always take the blankets from the beds and hang them over the bottom bunk to make a fort.

To me, these bunk beds were unique because they were made out of a thick wood and they were painted white. I had never seen them painted white before, which is why I remember this so vividly.

As years went by my sister become older and more interested in staying home. I was lonely being there by myself, having the top bunk all to myself. It just wasn’t the same with just me there. Even without her I would still use the blankets on the bottom bunk, but this would get boring real quick by myself.

While I was away at college one night laying in an inexpensive bunk bed myself, I received news that my grandfather had passed. This news caught me by surprised and shocked and saddened me at the same time. I’m going to miss those times together.
