How To Find Cheap Airline Tickets On The Web

August 29th, 2009

If you want to go somewhere and are not too picky about where you have to go, a good way to get dirt cheap airline tickets is to bid for them on Ebay.  Travel agents, who have to get specially Trust E certified just to put up listings on Ebay, often list cheap airline tickets to various hot spots around the USA and around the world on Ebay.

You can save lots of money this way if you bid for and win the cheap airline tickets, up to 40% to 50% off the published price.  Some tickets are specific, like today I see one from NY to London in business class for $2398.  That is a super deal since often these tickets cost 2x that much.  Since it is business class and not a super saver coach fare, there is no set date you need to go and can book at any time.

Other tickets have more restrictions but are still good deals and the restrictions, like a Saturday stay, or booking through Orbitz, are  not overly burdensome.  One I saw was for anywhere in 50 states of the USA on United Airlines with 5 months to complete travel.  That is not a tiny window at all.

One caveat often is that exchanges or date changes are not allowed, so make sure you are willing to lose your ticket should something come up.

Ebay has trips to popular places like Las Vegas, Hawaii, Mexico and Europe.  It also has very cheap international flights and packages to more exotic places like Chile.

Tax Deductions & Write Offs 2008, 2009

August 29th, 2009

If you run your business out of your home you may want to write off many of your household expenses. How in the world do you know which write offs qualify?

Expenses that are deductible include the business portion of real estate taxes, mortgage interest, rent, utilities, insurance, painting, repairs and depreciation. Generally, expenses related to the rent, purchase, maintenance and repairs of a personal residence are not deductible. However, if you use part of your home for business purposes you may be able to take a home based business tax deduction.

In order to qualify for a home based business tax deduction, you must use part of your home:

  • Regularly and exclusively as your principal place of business, as a place to meet or deal with clients, patients, or customers in the normal course of your business, or in connection with your trade or business.
  • You cannot claim this area of your home for a tax deduction if it is also used for personal use.
  • The exception is concerning the use of the home for daycare provisions, certain storage use such as inventory or product samples, as rental property.
  • If you use a separate structure not attached to your home for an exclusive and regular part of your business, you are entitled to deduct expenses related to it.

If you the owner of the home based business, use Form 8829 to figure your home office deduction and report those deductions on line 30 of your Schedule C, Form 1040.

Donʼt forget; if you are going to itemize deductions then, you cannot claim the standard deduction. If youʼre looking for a home mortgage tax break then you must itemize your tax deductions.

Make sure you keep accurate records of all of your expenses. You must to have the receipts to substantiate your claims. If you are going to use your home for business and want to claim your mortgage interest as a tax deduction, your mortgage lender will send you an official record of your mortgage interest paid. You will need to keep that paper in your tax records.

Medical Conditions Treated With Corrective Eye Surgery

August 28th, 2009

There are many cosmetic options for corrective eye surgery, but there are also some eye problems that can be treated and even cured with the appropriate procedure. Let’s have a look at some of the most common eye problems that can be treated in the operating theatre with laser eye surgery and other procedures.

Cataracts - cataracts appear as a clouding of the lens and affects vision as a person ages. Cataract eye surgery is performed to give the ageing patient improved vision.

Roving Eye - roving eye describes a condition where an individual may have an eye that doesn’t follow the other eye. Consequently vision is out of alignment and corrections need to be made to the extra-ocular muscles. These muscles are what move the eyeball in all directions. Eye muscle surgery is performed to strengthen, weaken, or reposition those tiny muscles to allow the eyeball to move with the other one.

Glaucoma – glaucoma is an eye condition where increasing pressure in the eye can lead to damage to the optic nerve and eventually blindness if it is not treated. A drain to relieve the eye pressure can be implanted. The condition can happen at any age.

Duane Syndrome - Duane syndrome is another disorder that can be helped by eye surgery. This condition is when there is little horizontal eye movement. Normally, muscles will be weakened to relieve the symptoms and allow more movement horizontally.

Nystagmus - nystagmusis is a condition when one or both eyes move rapidly or oscillate. A similar operation to the one correcting roving eye can be carried out to correct this problem.

Vitreo-retinal Surgery

Vitreo-retinal surgery includes many different procedures to correct eye problems. Of the many procedures associated with vitreo-retinal surgery is the repair of a retinal detachment. Retinal detachment can be caused by several incidents but one of the most common reasons for this condition is a blow to the eye. A tear to the retina can be repaired with a laser photocoagulation. Other procedures include ignipuncture, which is no longer widely used, pneumatic retinopexy, macular hole repair and vitrectomy eye surgery.

There are new discoveries happening in the corrective eye surgery scene every year and if there is no treatment for your condition at the moment then it is very likely that there will be one developed in the not to distant future.

AARP Dental Insurance Care

August 28th, 2009

AARP Dental Insurance:

How the plan works and what is covered: The AARP Dental Insurance Plan is a dental PPO, called Delta Dental PPO. This gives you the freedom to see any licensed dentist and change dentists without notifying Delta Dental. The Delta Dental PPO network includes over 67,000 dentist locations nationwide. While you may see any dentist you like, you maximize your benefits if you visit one of the Delta Dental PPO dentists. These dentists are part of a select group who have agreed to provide treatment to Delta Dental PPO patients at a reduced fee. Because these fees have been prenegotiated by Delta Dental, your out of pocket expenses will likely be lower.

If you do visit a Delta Dental PPO dentist, you don’t have to pay the whole bill and then wait for reimbursement from Delta Dental. Instead we pay our portion directly to the dentist. We then send a notice explaining your portion of the bill and you are expected to pay only that amount to the dentist. Delta Dental PPO dentists also handle all claims and paperwork for you.

I have been with AARP Dental Insurance for several years and I have never had to report a problem about their service. I have been going to the dentist for over 4 years since I have been covered by them. I go about every 6 to 8 months and they have covered all the expenses that they said they would. I am happy with them. I have had other policies that have tried to weasle their way out of payment, and trying to make me pay for more than I should.

I don’t like hastle, so I go with AARP Dental Insurance because the dental offices just send the bills straight to the health insurance company and I never see anything. That is very convenient for me since I used to get the bill and have to send it to my old insurance company myself.

Maintaining Your Car to Save Money

August 27th, 2009

If you’re willing to get your hands a little dirty every now and then, you can save quite a bit of money just by doing some basic car maintenance yourself.  There’s no sense in paying a service technician or mechanic to do simple jobs when you can take care of them with your own two hands in less than twenty minutes.

Changing wiper blades is quick and inexpensive.  All you have to do is go down to your local auto parts store and consult the wiper blade size manual that is typically located right near the display.  When you find your make and model, select a product that matches the size listed in the manual.  If you have any confusion, ask an employee to help.  Pull up your wipers so they are perpendicular to the windshield.  Most wipers have a small clip or hook.  Disengage your old wiper blades and attach the new ones.  Make sure they are secure and gently return the wipers to their original position.

Changing motor oil can be done quickly and with little hassle.  Before you start, be sure to have the proper supplies.  This includes 4-6 quarts of oil (the type required will be specified in your owner’s manual), an oil draining pan, a set of drive-on auto ramps, and an oil filter.  Choosing the correct filter is very similar to the wiper blade selection process.  Position the ramps at the base of your front tires and drive your car up them.  When you work up the courage to get under the front of the car, you’ll find a large round pan with a small bolt in the center.  Place your oil draining pan under this bolt and unscrew it.  You may need a socket wrench.  Allow the oil to drain.  Put the small bolt back into the bottom of your car’s oil pan when it is done draining.  You should see an oil filter that closely resembles the one you just purchased.  Unscrew the old filter and replace it with the new one.  Some filters can be unscrewed by hand, where others may require a special wrench.  Pop the hood and fill your car with the new oil until it reaches the manufacturer’s specified amount.

The EPA considers used motor oil a hazardous household waste.  It is important that you dispose of it properly.  In most states oil change shops and mechanics will recycle used motor oil for free.

Be sure to routinely check the amount of the various fluids in your car.  This can include windshield washing solvent, transmission fluid, and brake fluid.  Locations of these particular fluids vary per automobile, but should be clearly identified and easy to find.  In most cases, unscrew the cap and check the current level.  If necessary, add more fluid until it reaches the manufacturer’s specified amount.

Please keep in mind that these are only rough guides to simple maintenance.  For more exact instructions, you should always refer to your car’s manufacturer or a certified mechanic.

Paying For An Unwanted House Is Stressful - But Fixed With Rent To Own Sales

August 26th, 2009

So your homeproperty has been up for sale for months, and you can’t afford to make mortgage payments on both your old and new homesproperties. You’re serious to sell but don’t want to lose money. Now may be time to consider making your old home a rent-to-own property.

Before entering into an agreement, sellers have to decide the sale price and rent they’ll charge for the house. Both amounts are subject to negotiation, just as a regular sale would be. But sellers and buyers need to remember that once they sign an agreement, the sale price of the house is locked in until the end of their rental term, between one and 5 years. Even if other housing prices rise or fall during that time, the original agreed-upon sale price is final.

Renters also have to pay an rent to own fee and then a rent premium. The option fee is a set amount that the renter pays the seller. If, at the end of the lease period, the renter buys the house, the option fee becomes part of the down payment. If the tenant doesn’t buy the house, the option fee becomes income for the seller. Rent premiums are an amount slightly above the typical rent, with a portion of that money going toward a down payment.

Rent To Own Home Example

Here’s a normal example: The property is worth $200,000, and typical rent would be $1,000 a month. Someone who’s renting to own might pay $1,200 a month in rent and then acquire a $400 rent credit each month. Add the option fee, in this case $5,000. On a three-year lease, the renter would realize $14,400 in rent credits. Adding the realized rental credits to the option fee, the renter has accumulated $19,400 for a down payment.

This is a valuable alternative for buyers who otherwise wouldn’t have the credit score  or money saved to purchase their own home. And the sellers, eager to relieve themselves of the burden of the old home, earn this money whether or not the house sells once the leasing period expires. If, at the end of the contract the renter can’t or chooses not to buy the home, the seller holds all of the money.

As with any business contract, there are mutual risks and disadvantages involved for both parties. What if somebody else wants to purchase the house for a higher price than originally negotiated? Who’s responsible for fixing the leaky roof in the middle of the night? All these terms can be addressed up front in a rent to own agreement.

Do Your Feet Hurt?

August 26th, 2009

Make sure you and your children have the right kind of shoe that will support running, walking, and your weight.

Most people suffer from some kind of foot pain throughout the day.  There are many treatments and tips to get rid of serious foot pain relief if you follow expert advice.

Are your feet in agony?  From poor fitting shoes, to inherited toe woes, foot pain is no laughing matter.  We rarely take care of our feet until the pain has become so severe we can’t ignore it any longer.

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, 84% of women have suffered from at least one painful foot problem.

Do you purchase shoes because they’re cute or fashionable?  You wouldn’t think about putting shoes that hurt on your child’s foot!  Don’t do it on yours, either!

Here are six of the most common ailments women experience and smart tips to help alleviate their foot pain.  Take this advice and you’ll soon feel  as though you’re walking on air!

How To Put Your Best Foot Forward:

Disclaimer:  These foot ailments are the most common, but for serious foot pain, please consult your podiatrist or a podiatric surgeon.

1.       Do you have Plantar Fascitis?  This feels like a sharp stabbing pain in your heel and it is worse when you get up in the morning.

·         Cause – The plantar fascia is a that thick band of tissue running along the bottom of the foot from heel to toe and people with all types of insteps (arches)  are prone to this irritation.  If you wear very flat or really high heels, the problem will get worse.

·         A shoe should support the arch.  If not, the fascia will stretch and that will cause further inflammation.  Does your Achilles tendon feel tight?  That is also one of the symptoms.

·         Treatment – Choose shoes with some structure.  Pairs of shoes that have some arch support and enclose your heel will be much better than flip flops or flats.  Avoid going barefoot as much as possible.

·         Stretch Your Foot In the Mornings – When you sleep, your plantar fascia is relaxed.  It gets a real wake-up call of tension when your first put your weight on it.  Before beginning your busy day, wrap a towel around your feet and pull the toes back, gently  stretching the tendons.

·         Reduce Swelling – Using a plastic bottle filled with water, freeze it, and then roll it under your foot for a few minutes to relieve the pain.

·         Consult a podiatrist for custom orthotics – I know you may not think it makes a difference, but these special inserts are molded specifically to your foot’s shape!  This will help control foot motion and decrease the daily strain on the plantar fasciae when added to the inside of your shoe.

2.       Ingrown Toenails?  This feels like a throbbing sensation and is most often located on the side of one of your big toes.  Is it swollen and red?

·         Cause – When the nail edge grows sideways into the skin of the toe, it forms a toenail that is growing inward instead of straight outward.  The pressure on the nail bites into the surrounding skin and can really cause some pain or infection.  If your shoes are too tight or narrow around the toe area, you are at risk for getting an ingrown toenail. If you cut your toenails incorrectly, you could also get an ingrown toenail.

·         Treatment – Don’t wear pointy toed shoes.  If you’re going to be walking a lot, carry your dress shoes and walk in structured walking shoes.

·         Use moisture cream on your feet daily – Reduce callus formation by keeping feet well rubbed and moisturized.  Before wearing shoes, make sure the lotions and creams are absorbed and your feet are dry.  When a callus develops, it causes more pressure on the ingrown nail or other parts of your foot.

·         Cut toenails strait across.  Don’t file the corners down.  If you get pedicures, make sure they follow these procedures, don’t assume they will or know what they’re doing.  Choose a reputable salon or go to a podiatrist.

·         See a podiatrist if you think you have an infection!  Don’t delay!  No “self-surgery” as digging around on your toenails or skin can lead to serious infection and deeper injury to the nail or foot.

3.       Bursitis – This feels like a painful bump and is located on the back of the heel.

·         Cause – This can occur when you have an enlarged heel bone.  If you wear stiff-backed shoes, this can worsen the bump further, inflaming the bursa, which is a protective sac of fluid.

·         Treatment – Wear shoes with open backs, until the irritation has lessened, or all the time, whichever is necessary.

·         Use Dr. Scholl’s Foam Cushions (donut shaped pad) – Place this pad over the bump to alleviate pressure and use ice at the end of the day to soothe the inflammation.

·         Consult a Podiatrist - If you have chronic and constant pain in this area of the foot, consult a podiatrist for advice and possible removal of the bump.

4.       Stress Fracture? This feels like a tender area, frequently on the front part of the foot, along the 2nd or 3rd metatarsal, the long bones in the top middle of the foot.

·         Cause – Any repetitive stress on the bone, like walking and running on hard surfaces and while wearing shoes that are not absorbing enough of the shock.

·         Treatment – See a doctor!  You will need a surgical shoe while you heal.  That shoe has a hard bottom that will keep the affected bones from bending.

·         Be Patient – Stress fractures heal in about 4 – 8 weeks, normally.  Don’t over stress the foot, no running or long walks.

·         Prevent re-injuries – Keep your weight at a healthy level and wear supportive shoes.

5.       Bunions – These are sensitive and protruding lumps or bumps at the heads of the big-toe joints and can pull your toe to an angle.

·         Cause – These might be hereditary, and can be developed if you have low arches, or your feet tend to roll inward.  Your bone actually moves as the bump seems to get larger.

·           Pointy toed shoes can make the bunions worsen.

·         Treatment – Shoe choice is critical.  Best choices are shoes with a wide toe area and a lower heel but not flat.

·         Gel Pads – Placing a gel pad over the bunions to cushion them and reduce the pain is helpful.

6.       Neuroma – This is a shooting pain in the ball of the foot.

·         Cause – This pain is caused by pressure on the nerve in the underside of the foot.  Swelling can occur.  Narrow, pointed shoes put more pressure on an already irritated nerve so pick shoes with wider toe room.

·         Treatment – Wide toe areas, and low heels.

·         Use anti-inflammatories.  Ibuprofen is good but if you don’t experience relief see a podiatrist.

·         Surgery – For chronic neuroma that doesn’t get better, surgery such as cryotreatment can help .  Your podiatrist can make that determination.

Take care of your feet, they need to carry you through the rest of your life!

Cheap Airsoft Guns Are Very Fun

August 25th, 2009

Cheap airsoft guns are cool for a number of different reasons.

Some of these include:

  • there are models with a realistic and lifelike look
  • there are models which have both the realistic metallic look and the true feel and weight of a real gun
  • they’re much cheaper than real guns
  • they’re far safer than real guns

I remember when I was a boy one of the great things about being in Texas is getting to learn about and use guns. It’s just something boys like to do…we like guns.

But you have to have someone teach you how to use guns and more importantly how to use them safely. This safety can’t be overestimated because all guns can be dangerous with airsoft guns and BB guns having the potential to put out eyes.

I had a friend at school who had a tragic accident where he was playing with a BB gun and ended up shooting out his friends eye. And that’s not something you get over because the friend was blind in that eye for the rest of his life.

Cheap airsoft guns are a low hit to the pocketbook and the other great thing about them is they’re a great starter weapon to train on.

They’re far less risky and can do far less damage than real guns so teaching your son or daughter using a cheap air soft gun is the way to go. It’s like putting training wheels on the bike so he doesn’t hurt himself.
